Are you fascinated by the idea to build a synthetic cell from scratch? Would you like to work with DNA origami, lipid membranes, 3D printing or microfluidics? Are you looking for a young and friendly, supportive and hard-working research group?

We are looking for highly motivated early-career researchers with a strong quantitative background in physics, biophysics, chemical engineering, molecular biotechnology or similar.

Bachelor / Master / HiWi / PhD / Post-doc (m/f/d)
in Biophysics

The independent Max Planck Research Group Biophysical Engineering aims to reconstruct synthetic cells and cell-like behavior from the bottom up.

The Max Planck Institute for Medical Research is a prestigious and international research institution located in the centre of Heidelberg and on the campus of a world-class university. We can offer fully funded positions with highly competitive, above average salaries for the best students and graduates from around the world.

A post-doc applicant should hold a PhD degree in biophysics or in a related field. The ideal candidate should have experience with DNA origami and/or atomic force microscopy, 2-photon-lithography, programming and quantitative data analysis. We are happy to host candidates with postdoctoral fellowships (e.g. Marie Curie, Humboldt) and offer support for applications and career development.

A PhD candidate should have a Master’s degree in (bio-)physics or similar. Experience in relevant research areas is a plus. In close collaboration with Heidelberg University, PhD students will be affiliated with the Heidelberg Graduate School for Physics or the HEiKA Graduate School within the excellence cluster 3D Matter Made to Order. Professional development training will be provided through the schools and within the group.

For Bachelor, Master and HiWi projects, a background in physics, molecular biotechnology, chemical engineering or similar is highly desirable, relevant research experience is a plus.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increase the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
